same things happened to my comp many times, but I just open it up and use a vacuum to clean the dust that has accumulated inside the fan... once every couple of months, depending on how dusty your place is (an external air filter can help out loads, but my moms too stingy to get one :'()
would also be hard to run laptops in a dusty environment- I had to discard 2 laptops because the fan got dusty and i never tried vacuumin' it... then the power supply broke and some parts of the mother board too...
hope this was helpful...
PS- another stupid thing I tried before I thought of vacuumin' the fans were to put ice packs on top of the comp where the fan would be... kinda worked, and I didn't die, and neither did the comp... but i couldn't use the comp when the ice packs were thawed out...

When it starts up it may be quiet for a while, but stopping the computer for a while doesn't really fix anything. It is time to replace the fan. It is an easy job if you have the small tools to open the computer box and take apart any duct work around the fan. Just save those little screws for the re-assembly.
Remove the fan and note the number of wires and which wires is on which side when the connector is plugged in. Go to the local computer store (COMP-USA has a lot of fans) and find a fan that matches the size and wire count. Be warned that EVERY fan claims to be "quiet" even though we know that some must be noisy. If they have "dB" listed, go for the lower number because a higher number means louder.
Back at home, re-assemble everything in reverse order. You once again have a quiet computer. Total cost is about $10.

No, that's not necessary. Today's motherboards automatically control the fan speed, so that the cpu does not over heat when it is working hard, this is normal and will not damage the system. If your cpu was to become over heated the motherboard will shut the computer down. The only time I have seen this happen was when the computer had not been maintained and the cpu heat sink had become so dirty it could no longer do it's job.
Hope this helps.

Sounds like the fan may need replacing - is it making a loud "grinding" noise? If so, it may be time to start looking for a new fan/power unit for your computer.

The good news is that since you can hear it, the fan is still running. You will want to replace the fan soon, though, so there wont be a problem when it eventually fails. If it is the processor cooling fan that is about to fail, it is very important that you replace it quickly. The same goes for the power supply fan. The case fan is important, but not fatal if it stops abruptly.
Take care.

hmm are you sure it's your fan? well what are you doing for the fan to make a loud noise? sometimes when you're playing a game and it uses up too much ram it will use your hard drive as a temporary back up and that will make a loud blowing noise

Loud fans are signs that the power supply is hot and the fan is running harder to keep your computer cool. You should hould open it up and blow out the dust from the inside.
This is pretty easy to do, if you're up to it, unplug every cable from the computer, and open it up outside as it can be very dusty.

No it's OK the fan blades have just gone a bit wonky. Best to buy a new quieter power pack, they don't cost much & are pretty easy to fit. It's not a problem, just annoying.

No don't turn it off!! Also get it maintenanced.
When I was at a computer store talking to one of the salespeople he told me that one of the main causes for computers getting destroyed is the fan not working and they overheat
