Most floor layers recomend you use a 1/4" hard wood underlayment for the purpose of the warrenty on the flooring you put over it.

I recently found this out it it cost me 3 times what a normal peice of underlayment would but I was much happier with the results after the floor was layed and I imagine that I will have fewer problems with the vinyl flooring in the future because of it.

It pretty much depends on asking the question, What's the purpose?

Is this FIR to be a SUBfloor? OR are you considering the word underlayment as what is done in the process of installing laminate flooring?

I am making the assumption that this is laminate flooring you're putting down? If so, then I would recommend a 1/4 inch hardwood underlayment, I'd check with the warranty requirements of the floor manufacturer.
