See if you can get to a set of "Great Books of the Western World," maybe at a library. The first book inthe set is called "The Great Conversation," and it has a 10-year reading plan. The plan lists what you should read, in what order, and how many per year. For example, there are individual plays by Shakespeare, Aristophanes, and the other Greeks.

The Guardian newspaper in England published a list of the top 100 fiction books as voted for in 54 countries in 2002.
The link below gives these.
There are many other lists such as these - but you need to make your own mind up. There is nothing worse than trying to plough through a book you don't enjoy, just because someone else told you it was a "good book".

Must read: "West With The Night" by Beryl Markham
Excellent non-fiction so well written that Hemingway says he is nothing more than a carpenter building a rude pig pen in comparison to Ms. Markham's work.
Also, "The New York Times" provides to p 100 Book Lists annually for fiction, noon-fiction, poetry, and children's genres for contemporary works.

I would LOVE to help! I just created a website that identifies which classics everyone should read at some point... Go to the "American Classics" or "British Classics" page and click on a title to see why I think you would enjoy -- or not -- that work. The site is http://www.bookclubclassics.com
I hope it helps!! Also, check out the "Instant Classics" blog entry to see what new books are considered the best...
