I know this may sound a little harsh but if this is done, then maybe they won't fritter away their wages and will pay their rent, on time and in full, especially if they see others being punished. I do have sympathy with some of these types as it must be very hard knowing that when they leave work at the end of the day they haven't a home to go to. but they really have nobody else to blame but themselves. I think a short, sharp, shock would be considered tough love.

shawnLac...in your mind's eye. Allow me to educate you on the number of those with PhDs.
I don't know what this type of drug is but this surely answers my question in part as, if they are high on PhDs, well, then, that shows that they are wasting their money and not saving it so that they can at least "rent" some type of accommodation.

I think many of them prefer being in prison because you have shelter and food there.
Sorry but you are very judgemental - you know nothing about why individuals end up on the street - yes they are all people with stories, most of them very sad. They have society to blame.
You are also very smug and I hope you don't find out what its like to have nowhere to turn to

You really sould like a tool!!!
Not all homeless people are like what you say. And nobody chooses to be homeless. How much fun do you think that would be!? Especially in december and at christmas time.
It is not a crime to be homeless why should they be sent to prison.
Many dont actually work because they need an address before they can be employed. Hence 'The Big Issue' in the UK which helps homeless people earn money. With more homeless people than hostels etc some people really have no choice but live on the streets, having people look down their noses at them. When sometimes they previously were very respectiveful people who had a hard time and lost everything. And those who may drink and smoke need to have some pleasure in their lives if they live in a box all year round, I know I certainly would!
Gosh I could go on forever!!!

Allow me to elaborate
I too was homeless until last year
not because i was lazy!!!
How dare you assume that jail for homeless people would shock them into doing better.
While i do understand that you have been misled into believing that homeless people derserve to be that way unless they kiss society's *** and conform but have you ever considered that mental illness, recovering addicts/alcoholics, a terrible economy or depression may be a reason.
Furthermore, I know plenty of well to do folks that would better benefit from being "shocked" by the judicial system and need a reality check themselves.
Before posting such an ignorant comment consider that YOU don't know why homeless people are that way!! The judicial system isn't there to SHOCK people or give them a moral beating for being poor..its there for people that violate the law. That being said if homeless people break THE LAW they more then deserve to go to jail...
Otherwise I think its insane to suggest such crap

True, you got some people that can help their situation.
However the percentile is low.
You have to consider the homeless families, the mentally or physically challenged people (whose provider turn them loose on the street because funds ran out) or children who ran away from an abusive homes.
People shouldn't be punished for being in an unfortunate situation.
In the case of winos and crackheads, they should be put in a recovery center , not prison.

You sound demonic! A homeless person is not a certain type of person; it is anybody and everybody. One day in the life of many in New Orleans, over a half of a million became homeless. Circumstances dictate homelessness. I work in a homeless shelter and became homeless myself a few years back. I have a Masters and graduated at the top of my class. This is impossible in your mind's eye. Allow me to educate you on the number of those with PhDs who are homeless living in NYC and other large cities. It is ALL ABOUT circumstances. You are not out of the wood yourself my friend. Your self righteous attitude is toxic. Who will reach down to help you if or when you become down and out? Do not play on ignorance; thank God for His provisions then help others.

Isn't homelessness punishment enough? A lot of people are homeless because of mental disorder (schizophrenia, depression, etc..) or because they've suffered a tremendous financial loss, their jobs, families, and the like and do not know how to start over. It's a really serious issue that shouldn't be taken lightly and it should not be punished... it should be corrected.

This is not only cruel it is ludicrous! I work two jobs and can't make ends meet. Many people are working poor like me , living from paycheck to paycheck with no savings. I have no car payments and no credit card debt. It is not my fault that my wages do not keep pace with the price of oil.
Your questions shows an abundance of ignorance. I can only assume you are too young to consider all the facts involved in this very complicated situation. Thanks to God that I still have a roof over my head.
