While the ship was sailing in the north atlantic they recieved warnings about the icebergs in the area but the ship's captain had been reassured that nothing could sink the ship. When the bridge was finally notified about the iceberg they began making the turn too late and the ship struck the iceberg on the side, below the water level. The two big errors were that the quantity of lifeboats weren't enough because the company that built the ship thought that the shear quantity of boats to supply all passeners didn't look good. Literally. It was a design choice. That many lifeboats simply cluttered the side of the ship. The second mistake was that they didn't start evacuating till later. They actually waited and told the orchestra to continue playing to distract the passengers. Truth is stranger than fiction.

I believe that conceit and arrogance contributed towards the Titanic's demise. There is no doubt that it's sinking was caused by a collision with an iceberg and remember that bin 1912 there was no such thing as Radar. The ship relied on lookouts and as the night was dark and cloudy the iceberg was not seen until it was too late to avoid it. A ship of the size of the Titanic cannot just stop or avoid obstacles. It takes several miles to stop the ship and one or two to take evasive action. The ship's crew had been told she was unsinkable and they believed this. So did the ship's owners who provided inadequate lifeboat facilities for the number of passengers. Also the arrogance of wealth kicked in with crew members saving the richest people first to the detriment of the 3rd class and steerage passengers. I don't hold with 'conspiracy' theories or 'curses' either. The first is a contrived attempt at sensationalism and the second just 'mumbo-jumbo'.
There are plenty of good sites on the web to find the facts.

It was a combination of problems that happened that night....
The White Star Line didn't want to add the extra lifeboats that were needed simply because they believed their own press about the boat being "unsinkable" That was actually a misnomer because of the special compartment design of those first five compartments.
Also the Titanic's radio operator had been so busy that night sending cables from passengers that he got annoyed from receiving all the ice warnings from another ship (I can't remember the name of this ship). He simply ignored them and told the radio operator to leave him alone.
When the ship struck the iceberg the crew and passengers of that ship assumed that the flares going up were actually fireworks since the Titanic had been "partying" every night at sea. So the ship ignored them as a sign of warning. They were only 2 miles away from the Titanic and could have rescued all the passengers had they realized sooner that they were in actual trouble. Since the Titanic's radio operator shut off communication with them earlier in the evening....that ship's operator also didn't take incoming reports from Titanic until it was too late.
Another ship, the Carpathia was 4 hours away when they got Titanic's distress cry. They arrived after the Titanic already sank beneath the ocean.
ALSO...something that they didn't say in the movie...the common distress call back then was PQD....Maritime changed it to SOS right before Titanic sailed...so Titanic was the FIRST ship to use SOS as a distress call at sea.
And while I know that the movie was far from accurate...we own it and it's my son's favorite movie. He calls it the "boat movie" LOL

Conspiracy theorists have suspected:-
(1) Sinking was an undeclared act of war (Kaiser's Germany?) which was hushed up to avoid diplomatic repercussions and national panic.
(2) Certain 'expendable' members of Illuminati elite were eliminated within the competing globalist factions.

A huge screwup by the captain of the ship that was practically RIGHT THERE. A huge screwup not having enough lifeboats on the ship for all the passengers.
