I will be going to Pharmacy school in 2009. I head that a good way of showing Pharmacy schools that you are really interested in Pharmacy is having work experience in a Pharmacy. I live in a small town and have already been to Wal-Mart and Walgreens. Both of which are not hiring right now. They are at their maximum. There are some small, family-owned drug stores however. Do you think they would pay an unexperienced college student to work there? How should I approach them? I know this may seem dumb but I don't know if they would hire me and I want the best way to approach them. Also, any alternatives would be nice!

Start by just doing a bit of job shadowing or something. Don't get too hung up on the pay. Offer to just be that extra set of hands for a few days at the family run stores pro bono. Nothing that would require them to commit anything to you. Make it a win-win situation for them. This will give you some experience at least and then you will be able to say you have that when you do go after other employers. Always remain professional and put together a resume and cover letter explaining your interests. Try hospitals and clinics too. Be persistent.

Just ask them if they are hiring. Make it clear that you are interested in becoming a pharmacist. Once you start pharmacy school, you can become a pharmacy intern. As an intern, you can do a lot more than a regular tech.
