Money is divisible and can be stored.

If you wanted to exchange a pair of shoes for a sweater, but a sweater is worth 1/2 pair of shoes, you either have to get two sweaters (which is not what you want) or just give one shoe (which is not what the other person wants).

Also, if you get fish in exchange for apples. Your fish will go bad quickly. You can't have savings of make investments with fish either.

There is no way to store value, like cash.

A money economy is simpler in that it requires a max of two transactions to get anything done.
(1) My stuff to A for cash
(2) my cash to B for his stuff
Barter could require a trade with C to get something that B wanted, and there is no rule that this chain could have only three links.
