Its a restored 66 Chevy El Camino with a 383 it was an automatic but was converted to standard. I let him drive it yesterday and the problem started when he got down the street and tried to put it into 2nd gear. It will start and rev and all that but it won't move at all and just stalls when I try to catch first gear. And I thought it was kind of weird how he left it on a hill in neutral without the Ebrake on and it still wouldn't budge. Its a 4 speed (H) with reverse on the upper left and the shifer (hurst shifter) will not move to the left to go into reverse anymore. There were fluids on the ground, in a 'V' pattern. My dad said not to let any boys drive it and I have to fix it before he finds out!

The transmission is new, only 3k miles on it. I know next to nothing about cars but maybe its something simple like being stuck between 2 gears? Where might the fluid on the ground have come from?

well i got some news sorry but its all bad i dont think your bf did it but it sounds like the detent spring that keeps your shift forks from moving into the out put shaft gears when your in another gear has stuck or broke letting 2 gears try to drive at once causing your trans to go lock up and most times break off gears or snap the housing but the good news these trannys are a easy find at almost any salvage yard for cheep and a 2-3 hour fix out withe the old and in with the new/used will get u back going the only thing u must find out is it a muncie, saganaw, or borg warner trans so it will fit you shifter linkage

You have to get under it and pull the linkage back into neutral. It sounds like it is caught between two gears. I had this happen several times on my 66 chevelle and 57 chevy. I have heard it's because the shifter is bogus and should be replaced or the gear shift box inside the tranny is worn and sloppy and should be rebuilt or replaced or both. Good Luck, with a nice rod like that, I would pull the tranny and rebuild it completely and have the shifter checked out. When fixing up or restoring a muscle car, you should never go half way.

There are people who can destroy a car in nothing flat. Your Ex-boy friend (I hope)is one of these.
Fess up to your Dad and take your medicine. His help might be more helpful then any you will get here.
I am more concerned about you, that is because you are trying to protect that guy, when he is in the wrong. The fact that he may have shelled the transmission shows that he has no respect for what is yours. It also says that he has no respect for you.
Please get out of that relationship before he abuses you like he did your car.

It's really hard to tell without taking the cover off. It sounds like he blew the input shaft out of it. If the place you got your transmission from treated you good take it back to them and tell them what happened and they can look for certain things. But most important never ever let anyone drive your car but you.

Its nothing your boyfriend did. you just happoned to havfe a bad transmission. If you bought it from someone recently you need to go back to them and demand your money back or take them to court.

you either have to get a new transmission or rebuild/have rebuilt the transmission you have.

Its nothign your boyfriend did unless he was poping the clutch (reving the engine and letting go of the clutch to cause the wheels to spin and do a burn out). asside from this if he drove it wrong the clutch plate would have burnt up NOT the transmission gone out. I did this. and it took a trip across town for it to happen.

your boyfriend did NOT brake it. It just happoned to go out when he was driving. there is nothign wrong with letting boys drive your car as long as they are driving it too hard. poping the clutch and what not.

well, cars like that are expected to break down on you. its very normal for their transmission to get jammed like that. They were a bit of a hassle even when their first model was designed 45 years ago! what you probably should do is find a brand new Tahoe transmission or something newer and fit it in that car so it wont break down on you.
its not entirely your boyfriend's fault dear.

There's many things it could be, but it could be a gear since the trans. wasn't fully broke in yet. Also check your clutch, clutch linkage, and the fly wheel! Best of luck!!!

It has to be towed to a reputable Standard Transmission repair shop, I think you are looking at a $1,000.00 or more.

Good Luck
