Quite easily, I am surprised that money was paid out in the first place. I thought it had to be 7 years missing until declared dead.
I wonder if we have heard the whole story yet! Greed, what other reason could there be.

I watched a movie that this question that I use to have. I guess there is more than one way to do it, but one way that I seen was these people each had a needle filled with this stuff and once they injected each other with it people thought they was dead, but really they was in a coma for 24 hours. While they was in a coma, you know how a dead person has to be em bombed? Well, the people that was in the coma paid this other person to stop the em bombing and how that person stopped it was he gave the em bomber a hugh bag of cash lol. Then, they 2 people that was in a coma was put in the casket and lowered into the ground.
Just like a normal funeral. Later, when 24 hours was up that guy that was paid to pay the em bomber dug the 2 people that was in a coma. By then they was awake. Also, they traveled to the other end of the US so no one would recognize them. I seen this off of a prison movie lol.
I guess the main idea is to make sure that person doesn't get em bombed. I think that people that fake there own death *that has family* is only thinking of themselves. There was another movie and this guy faked his own death by going hunting with his wifes brother-in-law and they was on horses. All of a sudden the guy started an argument with the brother-in-law and then took off towards a streem then a gun went off. When the brother-in-law got there he seen that guy laying in the streem face down.
He looked dead. So the brother-in-law left to call the police and when they got there, the body was gone. The police automaticly suspected the brother-in-law and the "dead" guy's wife receved the insurence money off of her husband. It was 5 million dollars. The wife knew about him faking his death because he went through it with her.
Anyway, in the end she told her sister and her sister wanted in on it too or she was going to tell so she had no choice. Also, her "dead" husband always beat up on her. She hated him, but she didn't want to lose that money. So she accually killed him. Basically it all blew up in his face and then her and her sister explained it all to there mom and dad and to her sisters husband.
They was mad at first, but they got over it when she told them that they've got 5 million dollars. What people do for money. They say that money is the root of all evil.
Hope that answers your questions! :)

Frist, why? Usually for financial gain from life insurance policies. Sometimes to escape some form of punishment, either legal or personal. If the "mob" is after you, you might do anything to disappear, even fake your own death.
How is more difficult to explain, because there are so many ways to do it. The main problem is "dying" without leaving a body. Your example "disappeared" while canoeing, and it worked pretty well. No witnesses, no body, no problems.

How is easy -- stage an accident such as a drowning at sea, one where it's reasonable to assume the body wouldn't be found.
Why -- cash in a live insurance policy. Get out of a bad situation of some sort (legal, marriage, financial).

John Darwin wanted to write a book about panamanaian cooking, he needed a lot of time off work to go to Panama, the birth place of herbs and spices, so he decided to fake his own death to claim insurance and any holiday pay owing, after 5yrs of writing about panamanian spices it was time to come home, but his wife decided to stay in Panama, so he decided to come clean and walked in to the nearest police station and declared, my name is Darwin and I have written a book called "The origin of the spices". That's all there is to it really.

God I love this story--- especially because my Dad represented a guy who did the same thing. His name was Barnett and he pretended to fall off a barge and drown in the Mississippi river. --- his wife was in on it but when she got the insurance check and handed it over he split and left her with six kids and no income and she couldn't report it. Years later he came wandering in the town with the same shirt (one of those with the name embroidered on it), only he had taken the B off and was going by the name Jon Arnett -claimed to have amnesia but she ratted him out and now hes in Menard Corrections and no doubt someone's b**** --- good thing about the amnesia - he won't be able to remember all the good lovin' he's getting in there, eh ?

Money is usually the main reason. The greed for money can make people do some of the stupidest and most damaging things I know of.
