I've only known of it happening a few times in my life.
They key would be living in a cold climate (USDA zone) where plants go dormant in the winter, making sure the tree is extremely well watered before 'planting' it, and getting it into the ground before the frost layer becomes too deep.
Rooting hormone might help, but even then I'd think it's very iffy.

Well, Don is right, but does he have to be so negative? Once a tree is separated from it's roots, the tree is dead. It can take up water for awhile...a few weeks at most. Forget aspirin! That notion needs to be buried once and for all. If the tree is up and decorated, there's not much you can do other than raise the humidity in the room and turn down to thermostat to less evaporation. With a fresh cut tree, you have the stand with water waiting, then recut the butt (trunk bottom) removing 1-3 inches and immediately plunging the tree into the water. The foliage will still suck up the water for awhile, eventually the foliage dries and any futher water intake is done. As for what to add to the water.......try 7-up. The sugar helps as does the phorphoric acid in keeping down bacteria for a few days. But eventually the tree is gone. Other option is living tree with the root ball still intact, but the tree can be inside only 3-5 days before it must be returned outside least it breaks dormancy. Plus the suckers weigh a ton! I'm a wife of a forester who hated artificial trees. We cut fresh and dragged it home and played the water game for too many years. Finally "he" decided we needed an artificial tree so he could keep his tree up for as long as he wanted.

No. Once the roots are cut off, it's gone. Where I live, the trees are sold with the root ball so you can plant later.

Once it is chopped it has no roots to anchor it in the earth and provide nutrients and water so it is dead.
