Most notable are Sir Harold Jeffreys and Inge Lehmann.

Jeffreys was the first one to note that the outer core was liquid, because S-waves stopped at a certain depth all over Earth. S-waves do not travel through liquid.

Lehmann was the first to note that the inner core was solid due to the velocity change in P-waves at a certain depth.

Many others have contributed to studies on the mantle's composition and the crustal density.
