I gotta tell ya, I've been hearing this same stuff since I was 15.... I'm now 55. The sky is falling, the sky is falling! Go reread the Fairy Tale. Our Govt. Sucks! Yep! Seems like a natural part of a Govt. is that it sucks.... just get used to it, OR, how about trying to get involved with it and adding some positive input into it? I spent almost 3 years working for my State's Govt., and while I was there I actually did WORK (I know it's a 4 letter bad word, I'm sorry) and I actually HELPED people do their jobs. I found a bunch of Apathy and an even greater bunch of Lazy Whiners there, it is in constant need of some positive people to keep "the faith" and keep things moving forward. The Goal, lest anyone forgets, is "Liberty & Justice For all". When you see the Govt. needing help, as a good American it is up to YOU to speak up, help out, just do whatever you can. Democracy, unlike the Professor's assessment, is a Governmental Experiment. A Dynamic one at that. It can change everyday. Don't just ***** and complain, that's the easy way, get off your duff's and do your part. Millions of us already have, that's how we got as far as we are today. But to just think you're born with the innate right to have good roads, Police & Fire Protection, Welfare, Medicade, Medicare & all the other things our Govt. DOES supply is to take advantage of everyone else around you who IS doing their part. So come on, join us in our Grand Adventure, what you're afraid of losing your Apathy? Your Cynism? Your God Given ability to complain? I assure you, you can have all that and a good life too while you're doing a good thing for everyone. You're the one who's got to make the difference. All ya gotta do is contribute. Have a Great Day! and if you're not, I really don't want to hear about it!

Yep....some do. We've had so much legal and illegal immigration that I'm afraid between that and schools teaching the wonder of "globalization" to our kids, there are very few left who knows what it really means. Ed gave alot of info and we were supposed to learn from our mistakes.....obviously we dropped the ball. Kept thinking it was a phase we'd get through and didn't stand strong right at the very first signs. When I was younger I wasn't aware of it all because as with so many they had us working so much and raising children that there wasn't the time to play babysitter with the government. Obviously people have woken up and started getting involved and each day opens another new level of lies and corruption that I thought our government and laws was supposed to protect us from. But people have woken up.....we've gotten seriously involved and threw a wrench in a few of their plans they thought they could slide through. I think they are getting ticked because we have become annoying flies at their picnic and can't wait to find a way to silence us. One way or another. Silence the news and talk radio that doesn't support their agenda.....label you a terrorist.....turn young against old, racism is worse than I've ever seen and it's not "whites" doing the bashing, PCness to insane degrees where it boggles the mind, etc. etc. etc. Divide and conquer. They have convinced so many that Americans want to keep the rest of the world out to where even people living here think there's some concentrated effort to keep immigrants from having their slice of the pie. Laws, rules, standards, common sense.....long gone. It is frightening to think where this will end up. Even more so to find what garbage they are filling the young heads with. The Greatest generation isn't gone yet but I'm afraid the boomers will be the last to remember what it was like here before the end and I'm sure they are secretely finding a way to get rid of us as soon as possible so the official change can begin.

For what its worth canadaguy, I am an American. I have never met a Canadian that I did not like. Your question contains an excellent observation, with which I partially agree. I am also not alone in my agreement.
National ethnocentricity and human subjectivity make it difficult for a nation's citizens to be objective about their homeland. Evidence of that is some responder's personal attacks upon you instead of giving a direct answer to your thoughtful question. You should notice that more than 1/3 of the responders found your question to be "interesting".
PS. Edward, Joe Olsen at HAMLINE was my corporate law professor.

There you go, talking about our royal families and debtors prison again. The IRS could sure stand a bath in Boston Harbor, -- but then we all eat cake. Maybe at the birthing we saved the dirt and threw out the baby ? -- It's still the best thing on this Earth in my unsolicited opinion
Prof Tyler's observations look to be something to pause and reflect upon.

Some of us saw it coming when the wingnut was elected. Too many Americans sat on their butts and didn't vote...that's how the Kingdom came to be.
Most of us see it now that it's too late.
Many of us will never see or admit it.
It will take generations to clean up after his lordship and the thugs and criminals that have ruined our country and our relationship in the world.
I just hope Congress can keep the King in the Keep for another 300 days or so...or at least keep his finger off the war button.

Yes, which is why a change is on the way. I think on one hand I'm finding your back handed way of calling us stupid, insulting. On the other hand since this is the first time in eons your dollar is worth more than ours, I'm not too worried, I think we do see what is going on and it's beginning to change. This presidential election will bear out my opinion. I'm attaching an insightful missive from someone on YA...I found it to be interesting and clear...hope you do as well.
o Here is a message from the Founding Fathers:
TO: The People
FROM: George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock, Patrick Henry, John Adams, and all signers of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States and the entire First Continental Congress.
On this 231st anniversary of our independence, those of us you call the “Founding Fathers” have assembled in Continental Congress in heaven to assess the condition of the Republic we bequeathed to you.
We have observed that America has become the wealthiest, most powerful nation on earth. Be wary, so was the British Empire in 1776.
We must confess that we are annoyed by your habit of misinterpreting our words. In the Declaration of Independence, we acknowledge that, “...inalienable rights that are endowed by our creator.”
Don’t you realize that absent a Creator there are no inalienable rights?
Take the First Amendment, where we said, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,” you always neglect the other half of the injunction, “or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
In the Second Amendment, we said the right to keep and bear arms SHALL NOT be infringed. Remember, if private citizens hadn’t owned guns there would have been no Lexington or Concord. Why would we bother guaranteeing a collective right to arm state militias? If you ever wake up to what’s going on, your leaders will have cause to fear an armed citizenry.
You seem to view the rights in the first ten amendments as grants of power to the Federal government. We intended the Bill of Rights as a RESTRAINT on government, not as a restraint on the people.
We fought to the death to rid America of a Monarchy. Then, you established an elected aristocracy. We were farmers, merchants and professionals who resumed our careers after a brief term of service and so we never lost touch with our constituents. You have allowed it to become a career opportunity for your politicians.
You are now governed by an elite so different from yourselves that they almost constitute a separate species! You have allowed your elected “rulers” to hold office for 20 or 30 years, becoming detached from their roots, while rewarding themselves with lavish emoluments and pensions. WE revolted over taxation without representation. YOU condone serfdom.
WE revolted over a modest tax on tea. YOU have allowed your tax burden to become staggering. Despite the enormous expenditures of your prodigal politicians, even they can’t spend it all. And still, many resist returning the federal surplus to its rightful owners.
In our Declaration of Independence, we accuse King George III of, “sending hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance,” and now you complacently tolerate a bureaucracy that resembles all Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. “Harass our people?” today you allow bureaucrats to tell you how to run your business, build on your property and raise your children. “Eat out their substance?” Today you allow the government to make decisions for you regarding your health and welfare.
We envisioned the Judiciary as a co-equal branch of government that interprets laws based on the clear meaning of the English language. You have allowed your courts to become a law unto itself – raising taxes, ordering private relationships and substituting their will for that of the people.
Ben Franklin said, “We gave you a Republic, if you can keep it.”
From our vantage point it doesn’t look promising.
If we were alive today, we’d raise another rebellion.
I feel that time is here.

I don't think it's exactly the same thing ... but from the apparent apathy of the people answering your question, people are hopelessly allowing themselves to be led to the slaughter, without trying to do anything about it. Are ALL Americans convinced that democracy is a lost cause? That's pathetic.

Now instead of a Monarchy, we are ruled by the Monarchy of the Corporatism, The Ultra-Rich, Industrial Military Complex and The Almighty (with it's decline that word seems like a joke) Dollar.
Now with rigged, "electronic" voting machines, our votes are a joke so we've lost our power to control "government by the people for the people".
OUR democracy is a sham! Sold to the highest bidder!
Adding a Number 9 to poster Edward's list:
9. Bondage to internal bloodless Revolution and return to Democracy.
POWER TO THE PEOPLE!
The people need to realize their power, we can return to democracy through a concerted effort. We cannot allow the "power brokers" to divide us with issues like "gay marriage". This issue was ONLY meant to divide and distract from the REAL issues.
