It would take some research to confirm, but I would guess a
combination of:
1. Overwhelming feelings of powerlessness by people who feel excluded from the mainstream; by people who are loners.
2. Greater geographical mobility and loss of kinship ties - I suppose the state of anomie to which Durkheim referred. (Being alone in a crowd; disconnected from society).
3. The emphasis on individualism; loss of a sense of community. Everyone is out to gain an advantage over the next person. Maybe some lash out because they can't compete in a culture of ruthlessness. Empathy and compassion have been devalued.
4. Media influence.
5. Extended childhoods; no experience in personal decision making or learning how to manage personal autonomy.
6. Individual cases of abuse; bullying and the like where there is no way to address it through the justice and other systems. No validation of their pain; so they lash out to even the score.

Hmmm. I'll start with the last--I doubt anything is influencing the increase in mass shootings, but if I had to pick a scapegoat, I'd pick the media for glorifying tragedy--though they don't really seem to do that with most of these anymore now, do they? Now, the NRA telling people guns and ammo will be confiscated and gun and ammo sales booming--that's been true since 2008. If you were talking about the recent boom in gun sales and empty ammo shelves everywhere, I'd say that's 98% because of what Obama said after Sandy Hook. The other 2% is because of what Feinstein said.

The bad guys prefer unarmed victims!!.
When seconds matter calling 911 and asking the bad guy to wait is not a viable option.
Better to have a gun and not need it than to need it and not have it!!!
**Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens.**
So you are against the private ownerships of gun! Do you believe in fire extinguishers? Why, you can always call the fire department!!
No Weapons Allowed
Criminals this is a defense free zone
All law abiding people have been disarmed for you

Well I ain't no sociologist, but conflicts, lack of support/help, stress, and lack of anger control, can cause mass shootings for someone to do.

People who put no value on the lives of other people and who are determined to spread as much suffering and mayhem as they can before they end their own lives. These are people who dont know how to cope if what life is sending them and usually dont seek help to deal with their problems.

Kids being spoiled and coddled and not forced to think for themselves or learn independence. Plus - a media culture based on graphic violence on TV, movies, and video games. Yeah - keep banning movies depict sex, but go ahead and show the ones where 50 people get the hell shot out of them. Real smart.

a lack of self-confidence and self-worth in our young kids. Less focus on being good human beings and more focus in society on being like other people and "fitting in". Parents aren't making kids responsible for their own actions.
