There are several hundred Miata across the US that have had a 302 swap or a LS1 swap etc. The 13B rotary is a popular swap also. What the Miata community call them are "Monster Miatas",

Do a quick google search for them.

It can be done, if you have the time and money to put into it. It is not a task for the faint of heart or shade tree mechanic. The subframe has to be removed and altered, mounts need to be fabricated etc.

Most Miata owners, myself included, who want more horsepower have gone to Forced Induction.

Turbo's, Superchargers and the like. A lot less work....A LOT less cost than a 302 swap. And just as good results.

The typical Miata that is turbo'd or supercharged can be done for about 2.5k to 3k dollars. You should expect about 175-200 HP for that cost. A typical 302 swap will be more around the 10k mark for about 220HP, depending on what motor used.

200HP is a sweet spot for these lightweight pure sports cars. It is a good balance of speed and agility.

My Miata is about 215HP supercharged. It takes off like a bottle rocket, but still moves like a cockroach avoiding a stomping foot.

no not unless your planning on cutting the front of the car to shreds so you can pretty much shoehorn a much larger engine into the engine bay. at that point as far as price is concerned you might as well just buy a used car with a 6 or 8. But if your looking for power gains just go with a chip reflash and then drop in a turbo and youll still have a cheaper fix than the v6 or 8

There are several kits for it. I think most involve a 302 Ford V8. Ford also toyed around with putting a 3 L Duratec V6 in there for awhile.

On ESPN2 they have a program called Gearz hosted by Stacy David. On the program the did this swap. He put the drive-line from Mustang GT 5.0 into a Miata. He found a kit for this.

Follow the link below. This place sells a kit for this. I would not attempt this project without a good kit!

This project would be very cool. Especially if you could make it a sleeper.

As noted by several people the SB Ford V8 is a common swap. This can be any SB: 221, 255 (4.2), 260, 289, 302 or one of the stroker ones (331.347). How fast do you want to go, and how much $$$$$ do you have.

i would NOT recconmend putting a V8 but ike a 3.0 V6 could work. But still i would not because it would be too risky to buy the engiine and then finding that it will not fit. If i were to put an engine in a MX5 we call them over here in the UK then i would get the 2.0 turbocharged rotary engine from the RX7.

Its been done at least a few times.

The Ford 302 V8 (5.0) Mustang engine will fit in at least some years.

It might be possible to put a larger engine such as a v6 but i dont think a v8 would fit.

That's like wrapping a turd in tinfoil, why bother?

I'm sure you could if you can find a small enough engine but I highly doubt that a Miata could withstand a bigger engine without replacing the whole drive train.
