I feel for you. I've had bouts of insomnia as long as I can remember. Here are a few things you can try.
1. If you can't sleep at night, DO NOT nap during the day. I
know it's hard not to lie down for a bit, but fight that urge.
Even half an hour will disrupt your sleep.
2. No caffeine after 1:30 pm. This includes coffee, tea,
cola, hot cocoa, and chocolate.
3. If you want to go to sleep at 10:00, stop eating (anything)
by 8:00. Some people can't sleep while their digestive
system is active.
4. Exercise every day, but be done with your workout at least
three hours before bed.
5. Have soft lighting, either dim lamplight or candles, or both.
6. Try not to hang out in your bedroom or in the bed.
7. Have a bedtime ritual. The warm bath is good to start
with. I light candles and incense and massage my feet to
soft music. Also, I read in bed. It helps me to relax.
Sometimes though, as I get sleepy and the words start to
swim, I'll put down the book and turn out the lights, and
bing! I'm wide awake. On nights like this, I just fall asleep
with the book.
8. Have you tried an Over-The-Counter (OTC) sleep
medication? Most (if not all in the US) are actually
diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl. This
can be effective. I works for my daughters but not for
me. Also, there are MANY natural insomnia remedies.
If you explain your situation to the clerk in a health food
store or section, I am certain you will find several.
You say that you don't want to see a doctor--I understand. But a doctor is going to have options that regular folk don't.
This includes medications that you can't buy OTC. If it's a matter of money or insurance, I would call your local crisis line and see if there is a free clinic in your area. Insomnia is serious and the longer you go without sleep, the more. serious it is. Best of luck to you! :)

Working out before bed will actually keep you up since you get all juiced with adrenaline and endorphines after a workout. The same probably goes for the warm shower, it feels good and your body reacts to that by energizing.
You're probably losing sleep to a busy brain, reflect on your day before you go to sleep by writing things down or having a few moments of silence to ponder the day's events.
If that doesn't work take a recommended dosage of night time cough syrup 30 mintues before your bedtime. It's not the best idea but it will work.

Go to the pharmacy (in the vitamin section) or a health food store and buy some melatonin. Melatonin is a natural hormone our body makes to regulate our sleep cycle. It could be that your not producing enough. Take the melatonin at least 2 hours before you want to fall asleep and make sure you are at home as it comes on fast for some people, no driving or doing anything risky until you see how it effects you. My husband was taking Tylenol PM and I went and got the melatonin which worked 10 times better. Just make sure you get to bed at a decent hour as it does put you out for at least 8 hours. Its natural as well so no harmful side effects!! Also, its cheap!!! YEAH!!!

I had the same problem for months, tried baths, reading, sleeping at different times, nothing helped, when I did manage to fall asleep I only slept a couple hours...my sister-in-law (she's a nurse) told me to take Advil PM at bedtime, it gradually made me drowsy and I slept 6 hours, I only took it for 3 nights and after that I could fall asleep without it.
