Its a restored 66 el camino with a 383 it was an automatic but was converted to standard. I let one of my friends drive it yesterday and the problem started when they got down the street and tried to put it into 2nd gear. It will start and rev and all that but it won't move at all and just stalls when I try to catch first gear. Its a 4 speed (H) with reverse on the left and the shifer will not move left to go into reverse anymore. There were fluids on the ground. My dad said not to let any boys drive it and I have to fix it before he finds out!

The engine is new (1k miles) and the transmission is new as well and has 3 or 4k miles on it.

Do you think he broke it by shifting wrong? Is it really that easy to tear it up!?

It could have a shifter problem. It will take crawing under the car and getting all three shift rods back to there neutral posistions which is very dangerious because when you get neutral the car rolls over you. So jack up and place stands under the drivers side line up all three shifter levers then see if you can move the back shift lever 1/2 and front shift lever 3/4 and the reverse shift lever independently. lower the car and drive it carefully over to dad and say there is something wrong with this transmission. Leave out the part that the boy friend was doing burn-outs down the block.

It works best with at least two people - but can be done solo. Also - it's best with a downhill grade. Put the car in neutral and aim the wheels straight ahead. Get pushing until it's going at least 5-10 mph. Jump in, depress the clutch and put it in first gear. Pump the gas a couple of times and then release the clutch fast - and just as fast, stomp on the clutch and give it some gas. Releasing the clutch engages the engine - which HOPEFULLY will start a spark and make the engine turn over. When you depress the clutch again, HOPEFULLY the engine will continue to turn over and as you give it gas - actually run. Good luck! The first time is hard, but you soon learn how to do it.
