how come people get like 245 yrs in prison, when people dont even live that long?

There are various reasons. The chief one is that such sentences are based on conviction for multiple counts. It is possible that one or more counts may be overturned on appeal, thus eliminating their sentences. Another is that in some state parole is unavailable if there are consecutive sentences waiting.

Also, newspapers don't accurately report sentences (or accurately report anything else for that matter). Sometimes multiple sentences are set to be served "concurrently," meaning that they all start running together so that the total number of years is meaningless.

Because parole decisions are made based on a percentage of sentence served + time earned for good behavior, etc. A sentence of 245 years would increase the date that the person could be eligible for parole so that he would likely be in prison for the rest of his natural life.
