Why are female breasts considered to be sex objects?

The only function of the breasts is to feed infants. Why this obsession with breasts as something titillating - so much so that even nursing mothers find it difficult to nurse their babies in public places, shopping malls etc? And even female staff at such places are highly uncooperative and seem to harbor a grudge against any woman who seeks a little secluded place where to feed the baby

They're not in a lot of cultures, which is why going topless is ok. Men do it.

I'd say nipples should rank up there with mouths for sexuality, but obviously it goes beyond this.

Some societies are just too prudish.

I've read several places that men subconsciously find breasts attractive (along with shapely hips and full lips) because they are signs of a young, healthy "babymaker!" Pretty funny, but boobs and hips do signal a childbearing woman.
Our society has then proceeded to use breasts to sell everything from cars to chips to beer, but God forbid a woman nurses on TV! It's become odd and gross to feed your child naturally, especially in public. I can't tell you the number of times I've heard "Can't she just use a bottle?" or "Does she have to do that in front of everyone??" It's the world we live in, but the US is basically the only society so determined to view nursing as weird. Around the world women nurse in public and no one thinks any different. A great example is the story of an American doctor who was touring a hospital in the Middle East. He came upon a group of women nursing their babies in a circle. They saw him and dove for cover...for their HEADS. They left their breasts completely exposed.

I do agree it's sickening that so many people still look down on breastfeeding women, telling us we're doing wrong by nursing in public, or nursing our toddlers. Our society has over sexualized breasts, if everyone was breastfed I don't think it would be an issue. I never hide in my room or smother baby with a blanket while feeding, all of my children know what the main purpose of breasts are for and it wouldn't phase them one bit to see a breast in public. Then you have these parents that "sheltered" their kids from breastfeeding and these are the people in an outrage saying they have to explain sex to their children after seeing someone nurse in public.

Sure breasts are sexual objects too, but Secondary.

Parents, teach your kids the primary purpose of breasts! Maybe then their generation won't have to go through what we do!

I believe you are missing something here. Breasts are secondary sexual characteristic. While their primary stated purpose is to provide nourishment to infants, they are (whether you wish to believe this or not) viewed by men as an attractive feature on women. Do you honestly think that low-cut blouses are produced that way solely for the purpose of saving material? If breasts were ONLY for feeding, wouldn't women go topless, since nobody would notice or care? Finally, what did you think the business model was for Hooters's restaurants..ornithology?

You're right -- this is a rediculous problem to have to deal with, especially at this time of year when it's hard to avoid going to the mall. My daughter (4 mos.)doesn't feed well when covered up, so I don't bother! You see more boob anyways in low cut tops.

Because they are sex objects..they are very attractive bodily parts...of course their primary function is the production of milk, but they are also a way for the female to attract a male....
And if you choose to breastfeed in public, which is of course you're absolute right, you are going to have to deal with people who behave oddly around a breastfeeding lady..that's life unfortunately!!!

It is considered a sex object because developed breasts are only seen in females. Just think, if everyone have developed breasts, would people still consider it a sex object? The same way sex organs are considered sex objects because they are exclusively seen on either sex and not both.

Furthermore, if you believe in Freud, female breasts reminds men of their mothers, and men have inert/suppressed sexual desires to be with their mothers (Oedipus complex).
