Darwin was declared legally dead, so surely his passport would have been invalid. If it wasn't, did it not show up on the computers that he was still using it?
How many other "dead" people are entering and leaving Britain unnoticed? In the post-9/11 world, with terrorist threats everywhere, it's hard to believe this is going on.

So Ireland is to blame for Britain's bad national security??? Take some responsibility guys!
Illegal immigrants are different. They stowaway on trucks and ferries from Europe and risk their lives. John Darwin wasn't doing that.

The way John Darwin and his wife have screwed up this attempted scam and ruined their lives in the process, tells me that they weren't clever enough to think of getting fake passports.

You really do not need a passport to enter Britain. I regularly go to France by boat from ferry at Dover. On return I have never been asked for my passport nor was anyone else. Entering Britain is simple everywhere. This is just an example. You can cross from S. Ireland too into Uk into N. Ireland without a single check.

Looks like someone was sleeping on the job at customs control, because no one noticed this guy was alive a kicking. This is a clear example of not pay attention to detail and in this post-9/11 world we are living in, if Mr. Darwin was able to leave and enter Britain without no one noticing, that would be a huge lack of judgment.

Check out the AP article on Yahoo News.

I would think he had this well planned out and used a fake passport. According to the news report, he and his wife had their photo taken together recently, in the apartment they rented in Panama City.
"The Daily Mirror said its photo of the Darwins was taken in July 2006 in an apartment in Panama City they rented through the company Move to Panama. It shows the couple standing with the firm's boss Mario Vilar. Vilar said they had not used the surname Darwin."
Darwin has probably been hiding in Panama most of the time. It puzzles me why he went back to London to turn himself in. Strange case. This is one that will be interesting to watch.

You don't need documentation to leave the UK. One of the failed suicide bombers left from Waterloo Station disguised in a burkha.
But you would need a passport to enter a country that isn't in the EEC. So, a fake passport, an Irish Passport, or a 'day of the jackal' passport.
It must take a special sort of man to leave your family grieving for you while you're enjoying the profits from fraud.

I did wonder that myself.
Maybe he was a dual national? You only needed one Irish grandparent to get an Irish passport. I'm not sure if that's changed?

Yeah it's all so weird!! Also if he got away with it for 5 years why come back and say he thinks he's a missing person. Him and his wife must have known they would get caught??
