I live in this old house. I would say it was maybe built in the 40's, could be earlier. Maybe much earlier. There is a water heater/boiler furnace in the basement. You have to fill this water heater up to stay warm. Last winter I left the house for a couple days only and came back to burst pipes and an ice cold house in freezing weather. So basically you cant leave your home without either coming home to an ice cold house or pipes burst at the worst. So they come in and fix these pipes and then i see they still have the thing on where you have to fill it up everytime the water level goes down. This red light comes on and then you fill it up. On really cold days you have to fill it every day. Why would they put something like this in this house or not upgrade? Is this a normal thing in old homes or are they cheap?

You may want to try a little reason. Explain that the system is so old and outdated that it costs you more than it should to operate. Then point out that it's going to need repairs more frequently and that the parts are going to be more and more difficult to find which will cause him to spend even more money on it.

I think that will have more effect than pointing out the inconvenience that you're going through!

Just be glad you don't live in the 40's any more. You should move if you are not happy but in case you can't afford to here are a few suggestions. Most insurance companies would not insure a house like this so if you find out who insures the property maybe you can have them investigate and force the landlord to replace the furnace. How about the fire department in your town, this maybe a fire hazard also they might be interested in persuing this for you. You should also be writing letters to the landlord and keeping copies in case you wish to break your lease and they decide to keep your deposit. Hope this helps.

The house is very old and the upgrade is probably very expensive. Why don't you ask the landlord if he will do this upgrade of come in every day when you are gone (notify him) and fill the tank. Your only other option is to move when the lease is up.

The house isn't plumbed right, There should be a free water line running to a reservoir tank that stays full all the time, They're simple to put in.
