It's fine to drive barefoot. In spite of persistent myths, there are NO laws against driving barefoot. Unfortunately, this myth is so common that even some cops believe it... but everyone who believes this please see source and stop spreading this falsity.

Some cops are convinced it's unsafe and even though they know it's not illegal may try to write you up for unsafe or reckless driving, however please see the second and third link in the source, for two sites (one from the Michigan PD, one from an Australian newspaper) making it clear that driving barefoot is no more unsafe than many types of footwear that are regularly worn and could even be considered safer than many kinds of shoes.

About getting into an accident; if you're a regular barefooter, then glass isn't a problem. I've been barefoot for over ten years, regularly run at places with lots of litter (I'm not a driver myself, I use public transport and I'm not a morning person so I tend to have to run full speed at train stations to catch my train, and there's freshly broken bottles there with some regularity). Yet I get a tiny splinter maybe once a year and I have NEVER had a cut. I don't even mind when I go to the recycling center. Feet that are regularly barefoot get very, very tough, far more so than people wearing shoes generally think. Also, loose footwear would likely be lost in a crash anyhow (not just flipflops but even slip-on shoes that cover the entire foot could easily be lost), and you wouldn't hear anyone use this argument when someone is wearing a pair of loafers!

Yeah I have done before. Sometimes I get a terrible itch on my foot and scrabble around trying to get my shoe and sock off and then I dont bother to put them back on. Infact, I almost feel at one with the car with out shoes!!!!

Yes. In fact, when driving home from monday night football I often do so in order to get some much-needed air to my tootsies! I believe in some places it's illegal, but barefoot driving is the least of my worries on that score

no way man ,

first it feels crap, car pedals weren't designed for the 'bare foot' ,

haha imagine toe / heal braking bare foot

second its not to safe cos u dont have good grip on the pedals and could cause a crash ,

and if some think its safe to drive bare foot why dont rally drivers do it , or formula 1 drivers?

It's urban legend here in california that it's illegal. I always thought the same thing until a CHP officer came to my workplace and gave us a speach, and one of the things he was asked to discuss was the barefoot issue, and he said there is nothing in the vehicle code that makes this illegal, at least not in california. And to answer your question, absolutely.

I usually do during the summer. I keep a pair of slip on sandals with me and put them on when I get to where I am going.

Yes, if I had to but I think it's a better idea to wear shoes. You never know what is going to happen.
