She probably meant some sort of millipede or centipede. It's pretty common for potted plants to have some of those living inside the pot, especially if the plant came from an outside location.

It is possible. I myself have bought a potted plant and later find that leaves is downing althought I pour water regularly. Finally i found that in the soil dewelling many hard shell insects. So I think it is very possible in your case. Snake may go anywhere with holes especially in the fall of Autumn.
