and why/ why not?

Yes, absolutely, because most societies, including the one I was born into, are prejudiced against females. I was always treated as second best after my brothers. When I was about 13 my father said "What's the point of educating her, she'll only get married anyway." My brothers used to continually put me down as "just a GIRL". The only careers offered to me were nurse or teacher.

Sure, some things have changed, but there are MANY battles yet to be won.

EDIT: Laela - it takes my breath away to read what you wrote: you "don't believe in equality"!!!???!!! Doesn't that mean that girls are born into slavery?

a woman who believes in authentic equality isn't a feminist. She's the two an 'equalitist' or purely a 'humanist' like somebody reported right here. A feminist is individual who hates adult males. 'Femi' already tells you its purely approximately women. we are in a position to thank third wave feminists for that. purely the 1st wave feminists deserve know because of the fact they have been approximately equivalent rights for women. Edit : If I also have a spouse like Stefanie Dephanie, i might defend her with my existence and continuously positioned her above me for something. unluckily, my u . s . have not got such women different than the toddler boomers.

I consider myself a woman not a girl.

I'm totally a feminist because I'm a human being with the full right to live as one and being a woman or not "pure" white doesn't make me any less human.

nope - I am not fighting for anything, I like being a stay at home mama, I miss the days when men stood up so women could sit down. I miss when men used manners in front of a woman like not burping not smoking ect.
I miss the days when a woman was accosted it was a huge deal and everyone was against it now it seems since we are "equal" its every man/woman for themselves.
I think personally we have lost a lot more than we have gained.

-movie quote from That Touch of Mink
talking about what we gained with womans rights, and she is not far off we won the right to smoke and the right to vote.

Connie Emerson: [talking to Cathy] "For 2000 years we've had their children, washed their clothes, cooked their meals and cleaned their houses. And what did they give us in return? The right to smoke in public. We sold out for a cigarette - and you don't even smoke!"

Yes.

I think that men and women ought to have equal political, social and economic rights (and no, I don't mean equality of results in terms of social and economic rights, just an equal chance of sucess.) And even though there are differences between the genders, there is enough difference within them as well to make rigidly set gender roles absurd.

Yes.

No one should be relegated to slave or second class status just because they were born a certain gender, color or in a certain country. Society also benefits from giving everyone equal opportunities to become fulfilled and productive human beings.

Yes. I've seen the alternative, and it's completely undesirable.

yes i do

why? because i believe that no one should be disadvantaged or denied opportunities based on their gender or perceived gender.

i am now prepared to receive the inevitable shower of thumbs down because i have the nerve to call myself a feminist.
