Belief that "communism" was a united, monolithic force. So that if a country (like Vietnam) went communist, it was just a pawn in the march of the Sino-Soviet empire to world dominance.
Secondarily -- because the southern (originally, Diem regime) military weren't turning back the descendants of the Viet Minh, who had thrown the colonialist French out. The Diem regime was megalomaniac, corrupt and lacked popular support (this is understatement: read about it). Its armies were ineffective, also corrupt, and hated for the repressive actions they took. They were losing the struggle against the Vietnamese national revolution. So in came America, to lend a helping hand, and then another helping hand, in the process known as "escalation", aka "increased American involvement in Vietnam".
As you will note from the responses here, we're still refighting the Vietnam war in America. Probably forever, like our own Civil War. .. in which, despite the efforts of our South, no foreign military intervention occurred.

South Vietnam asked for help. Considering the mass murders which the communists did in North Vietnam when they took over, that was a reasonable request.
Also there was the risk that the NVA allies- communist China and USSR would expand further south.
BTW, the domino theory was correct- first fell Mongolia, Then China, North Korea, Laos, North Vietnam, Cambodia, SOuth Vietnam
US involvement meant that this conquest was extremely expensive to the communists. In the end their economies failed.

, The Chinese armies and, the regular Vite Nam armies along with Russian interpreters and cadre attacked along the entire North Vietnamese borders.
We were with the Rangers up North when they hit, all we could do was retreat and, blow bridges and roads as we went in a holding action, it was just about hand to hand all the way back, I was wounded twice.
