I have an invite to a Queensland (Australia) Cocktail dinner as the partner to my girl friend. I'm inspired by Bogart and Bond, I am thinking of wearing a white jacket with black pants (they aren't tux pants - way to formal). My question is do I wear white or black shirt with white or black shoe combination? What looks more fashionable and stylish?

I also own a black with white pin stripe trousers - would this look good with white shoes, white shirt and white jacket (no tie).

A white shirt and black shoes would be the conventional way to dress this ensemble. Black shoes are a given; white would present too glaring a contrast with the pants. However, a black shirt would be perfectly fine, and I would say more stylish. Especially with your inspirations, the black shirt is a bit more dramatic. It also brings out the sharper contrast of the white jacket. Good luck with the dinner-- just remember to make sure there isn't any cat hair on your black shirt!

Whatever you do, DO NOT do black-on-black to meet the governor. I'd go with a white shirt (if you've got one- if not, you could do blue striped), black trousers and jacket, red tie, and black shoes. "Conservative" is the key word here; no matter which way politicians lean, they dress conservatively. No eye-popping colors for shirts or ties; just go for a classy look. You don't need to look super fashionable to meet the governor; he's not your date.

Wear black shirt & black shoes

Stick to the white jacket & black trousers combo, not the pinstripe.

Have fun :)

White french-cuff shirt with cufflinks for that added flair - why no tie? If you want the sophisticated Bond look you should go with a black bowtie or maybe a stripe neck tie. Black shoes
