How exactly do you remove an oil level gauge on a kawasaki er5 so it can be cleaned and what is the best way to put it back?

I assume you mean the oil level sight glass, situated in the right-hand crankcase, just ahead of the clutch housing? These often become 'cloudy', when condensation occurs and causes the oil to emulsify.

Unfortunately, the sight glass is actually part of the crankcase and is fitted from the inside, before the engine is assembled at the factory.

This gives you two options:

1) Easy option - drain the old engine oil out, run some flushing oil through the engine to clean it, empty that out and then refill with fresh engine oil.

2) Difficult option - drain the old engine oil out, dismantle the entire engine, remove the right-hand crankcase, physically clean the sight glass from the inside, re-assemble the engine and fill it up with fresh oil.
