I'm an auditorial person (to the point I say care more about a girls voice than her physical appearance), and I listen to a lot of music. I also do meditation and energy work, so I'm at the point I mostly listen to music for the sake of the physical sensations it creates, and not things like lyrics.

I wrote this story up for a friend a few days ago, and I think it address your question quite well. It's by no means the only thing music can do to affect you, it's just a good example for the purposes of this short discussion!

On itunes on my comp, for some reason it randomly plays things at 1.09x normal play speed (for an hour or two one a month). The difference is just small enough that you don't actually notice it's happening unless you focus on it and ask yourself if it's happening (and know the songs really well by memory so you can see if they sound "off").
I noticed it because sometimes when I was on my comp I'd have a sorta manic state get entered where I thought a lot faster and felt all hyper and awesome and super great (plus some other things), which in a weird way you could compare to a cocaine high. At some point I realized what was going on and used a stopwatch to see if the time on the song was off (hence finding the 9%).
After that I realized changing play speed radically alters the effect of songs, and that +9% actually seems to be the best. So I downloaded a player that supported the function and started re listening to all my songs in this way. It was really cool and I was able to find some "completely new" music experiences as a result.

Hope that helps you!
