I'm not going to write a paper here on it, but I do find it interesting that the government and certain other elements were using socialistic methods to persecute folks who supported... socialism.

I have to shake my head at that... I mean, if the cure is worse than the disease, why bother? (Yeah, I know... politically powerful folks love to pull crap like this)

In the USA the anti-communist crusade conducted during the McCarthy witch-hunts, lead to the denial of America's Socialist history. The result of which is that the majority of Americans equate Socialism with Communism.

Here in UK we have no such problem and everyone knows that the Labour Party [Socialist] owes more to the Methodist Church than it does to Karl Marx.

However, were it not for the likes of Karl Marx and Engels of the British Communist Party of the 19th C it is doubtful that the common people would ever have gained the vote. Both these gentlemen were instrumental in leading the Chartists here in UK who's ultimate goal was votes for all.

Your question is the proof of the effeciveness of anti- McCarthy propaganda

The facts are that there were plenty of communist agents in the US even before WW2. Among others they campaigned against US help to the UK in WW2 (USSR was an ally of Hitler at that time). However once USSR got attacked they campaigned for immediate US involvement

McCarthy was involved in trying to root ot soviet agents from the US state depertment and military. he failed. The effectiveness of communist agents is proven by the abandonment of China to the soviets. Just imagine- one bilion people sold into slavery. Must be a world record! Another example was the forced "return" of over 3 milion anti-communist Russians- despite their POW status and seeking asylum- to the USSR after WW2, where they were promptly murdered by Stalin

The so-called "anti-communist crusade" in the US consisted of maybe a grand total of 100 people being asked to answer a few questions. All done in public, before a Congressional panel. No bullets in the head for anyone who refused (unlike in the USSR). However these people were very powerful hollywood producers- hence their reaction in creating the "legend of the martyrs of anticommunism crusaders"
