These are two of your top pitchers in the game today with the edge to Santana because of his consistency and the higher probability that Beckett could go down with an injury.

Pound for pound I would take Johan Santana in a heartbeat. However, the problem that exists in Major League Baseball is that if factor in the contract asking price and the amount of talent each team had/has to give up just to get each pitcher. Although Johan Santana is the better pitcher, Josh Beckett comes at a real bargain.

I'd like the Ferrari, but the BMW is a much better deal, dollar for dollar.

Johan Santana because of the fact he's a greater consistant pitcher and is an extremely good ace to have on your team. Josh Beckett's only having an excellent 365 days this 365 days, yet he in specific situations gets injured and isn't any longer very consistant for most of the time, so i'd decide on Johan Santana in this. i think of Johan is likewise youthful.

It depends what team santana goes to. Beckett is the most dominate pitcher in the major leagues right now. But if santana goes to a team that has better offense and a better bullpen than the twins, he might be as dominate as he was a couple of years ago. Right now I would have to say Beckett but overall Santana is the pitcher I would rather have on my team.

Santana breaks down? How did he lead the league in innings pitched (and wins and strikeouts and ERA) in 2006? Beckett has never even been in the top ten in innings, partly because he is prone to injuries. In other words, he breaks down.
When has Santana been on a team which was supposed to win in the post-season?
Johann's numbers are ALL better than Beckett's: more wins, innings, strikouts, lower ERA and WHIP, far more times leading the league.
Don't get mesmerized by a good month.
Oh, and Santana is a far better hitter: 66 OPS + compared to 10.

Santana; Johan is a better pitcher that is not an all or nothing pitcher. Even when he doesn't have his best stuff, he still can keep the other team down. Beckett has to have his best fastball to do that. Johan is the best defensive pitcher, gold glove proves that. Johan will last longer because his best pitch is the changeup, which doesn't cause arm strain like the fastball and slider.

Hey Wayne,

I'd have to say you'd go with Beckett for now because of how dominant he is in the post-season. For the regular season you'd go with Santana but most of the teams pursuing Santana are planning on being around in late-October.

beckett is a clutch pitcher and if your going to the playoffs he excells while santana breaks down, i'd rather have beckett.
