About the 73 war, I know that Israeli armies were clever enough to cross the nyle and surround so many of the Egyptian army that Egypt had to surrender and call a cease fire in this war, and then go into being the first arab country to have peace with Israel. This basically means Israel won.

I know that there was a war that Israel won where they took control of the Sanai, Golan Heights and Gaza Strip....was it not called the 6 day war? I learned about that in grade 13, 20th century history. King Farouk I don't know.

I also learned about the Suez Canal crisis and it's impact on Britain and France.

And ofcourse when I was younger I was shown the rich ancient history of Egypt. Mostly about an insignifacant king that was discovered by a British archeologist. But all this sure sparked my imagination and I still to this day have a love for all things Egypt. It is at the absolute top of my list for places I would love to visit, only I feel things are alittle too unstable and dangerous at the present time.

MOstly we learn about ancient history- pharaohs etc, but even that is just a fraction of the 6 thousand year history
then there is a big hole, and we learn again about Alexander of Macedon and his campaign in Egypt
Then another big hole and we return to Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, etc.
Absolutely nothing about the Christian history of Egypt. Nothing about the muslim invasion of Egypt. Nothing about the role played by Egypt in the Crusades and the war against the Mongol invasion. Nothing about the Turkish invasion. The next mention of Egypt is the campaign of Napoleon and the battles of Aboukir and the Pyramids
After that nothing till WW1. Then again silence till WW2 and ElAlamein. Then again silence till the SUez crisis.

As to the '73 war- there was an initial success (very spectacular in fact) by Egypt but the end result was an Israeli victory. It is a good thing that Egypt was the first country to realise that enough is enough and neighbours cannot be enemies forever.
In any case the only thanks Egypt ever got for its support of the Palestinians was subversion and sabotage- from the same Palestinians it was supporting.
It's good to see some intelligence in politics. If you look at Gaza it is obvious that there are still enough idiots around

King Farouk I have heard of, not much though. Saad zaghlol and Elnahas - sorry, absolutely nothing

When I was at school here in UK back in the 1940s and 1950s, the first thing we were taught about civilization was that of ancient Egypt.

King Faruke [Farook] was a major character constantly in the news. He was of Turkish descent and not an Egyptian.

Since I was growing up then as a Methodist Socialist, we were taught in Chapel about President Nasser - a hero of the Working Class.

The name Israel was never mentioned but Palestine was constantly repeated and collections of clothing and money were often sent to Palestine to help the people there, who's land and living had been stolen from them.

The only thing I can say about the Jews in my childhood, is that these words were written above the entrance to my Methodist Chapel = "Unto the victims of the Holocaust must go the last word".

I have not heard the last word.
