Some people call it a career, but I think of it as a hobby because it is more fun than it is remunerative. I write plays for teens based on novels they study in school. I began when I had to teach a group of high schoolers American literature over the summer vacation since they had flunked their exam over "Scarlet Letter." To make it more interesting, I photocopied the novel and cut it down to a readers' theater piece which the kids then read aloud taking different parts. They enjoyed it so much, I got the idea of publishing my "adaptation" of the novel. I reworked it and sent it off and the first publisher grabbed it up. I get a nice little royalty check on it and a couple others I've done since. But the amount of time I spend on this and the amount of money I make are nothing compared to the fun of doing it. So I consider it a hobby.

This is not easy to own up to....I am a roto geek....Rotisserie Baseball (won my league last year...mazel tov to me), Fantasy Football (Eli Manning needs to be neutered), and I've also done hockey. And after all these years, I still enjoy playing Strat-O-Matic Baseball.
Shameful, ain't it.
Oh, and among real world activities, I believe that a free afternoon or evening spent in the company of thoroughbred horses is not a day wasted.

Yes,several in fact.....I make stained glass windows, carve logs with lt. weight chainsaw, horseback riding, & muddin' 4x4 time...=)
