Don't heat it up.

Don't discharge it fully a lot (the battery can only handle a few hundred charge discharge cycles) and if you can try not to run the battery down too much (Li-Ion is best treated gently) though if you need the full run time of the battery don't be too worried about running it all the way down (it's only if you run it down everyday that you'd kill the battery off).

Every few months or just whenever the battery gauge becomes inaccurate a full discharge and recharge will recalibrate the gauge assuming you need an accurate measurement of how much battery life you've got left but you don't strictly need it (it won't actually help the battery, just make it report how much charge it has accurately) and don't do it too often.

Leaving the battery in the laptop will be fine, I haven't had any trouble from doing it in any laptop I've had with a Li-Ion battery.

You should also accept the fact that the battery will age over time and will probably be useless in a few years.

Battery life will vary between the hardware, and the stress you put on the machine.

Use it or lose it, is my comment, sure, don't run it too far down but take it of mains power for a hour or two at least once a week. This will keep it working longer.
