I let their mother buy them their gifts from me...she knows what video games they might want better than I ever would. And then I just give her the money back for them.
And I KNOW they like them because I watch them open the gifts on Christmas morning, and get transported with delight over them.
I live in a multigenerational home, with my daughters and their sons...all of us together. We have been living like this since 2004, and so far it seems to be working fine.

I give each grandchild a new pair of pajamas, a christmas book and a toy (in the $15 to $25 dollar range), they are 2, 4, 7, and 9. I never give money. To me that means you didn't think enough of someone to pick out a gift. I know lots of people (including some of my children) disagree. That's just my opinion.
DeeJay: I love your idea though. About how much do you put in each-equal amounts or according to age. My mom (she has 20 grandkids and 5 greats) used to just buy the same thing for each grandchild. My kids are the oldest and they hated that. Now for the younger grandkids or the ones she doesn't see often she sends money to their parents to buy something from her.

We buy the little 4 inch red with white fur top, Christmas stocking. They sell them every year at Walmart.
We put money in each stocking along with a love note and hang them on the garland across the arch between the living room and dining room.
We have 16 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
We hung the first stocking 28 years ago for our 1st grandchild.
This year we will hang 24 little stockings.
They love our Christmas Party. They draw names out of a basket to see who gets to take their stockings off the garland.
Now matter how old they are they get excited and we still see the joy on their face year after year.
They all collect their socks.
"Merry Christmas"

I don't know yet but I have been thinking about it. I have 2 grand daughters and they are going to Fla the 19th and coming back the 26th so we will have our dinner on the 26th or 27th. They don't need anything, really, except love and encouragement, Most of the time I give them gift cards so they can buy cool stuff they like. They are teenagers now and I can't guess what they would like. But they have grateful hearts and always appreciate their gifts.

The gift is in the giving. My grandchildren are too young to know who gave what.
But I am starting a savings account for my 5wk old grandson. Simply because he now has everything he needs. My one yr old granddaughter is getting the kitchen works and other toys and clothes.

Regardless of anything else I might give the kids, they each always get at least one good book from me. It might be the toys that get the most attention on Christmas Day, but the books are there on the shelf for them to discover and enjoy for a long time. They have all developed a strong love for books and won't go to sleep at night without their story. It's such fun now that the 7-year-old reads them to me.

I buy a few small things to wrap and mail so there are presents under the tree from Grandma, but their big gift is a Gift Card from Penny's so they can choose their own clothes.

I have thirteen grandchildren ......Tonight I 've been wrapping gifts yes because I keep each child likes and needs in mind when I shop. I know each of my grandchildren and i get them things that they like......The smiles on their faces.......I love to give gifts and take a lot of time thinking and planning........I've made it an art. I love my grandchildren and the gifts I give says that to them....
So far I have not had to give money ....I only would give money if I was sick or if i had know idea what to get them. If I did not know them!
