If we're talking about small-scale, you don't: adding field windings to a DC motor would be impractical.

What gets converted is the AC supply, using a bridge rectifier or a set of four diodes.

This *fits* a DC motor to run with an AC supply.

Most DC motors will run just fine on AC. There are many "universal" motors in daily use in kitchen mixers, for example. The reverse is certainly not true.
