In this economy where employers are outsourcing jobs and sending the work over seas, an employee needs to be very very careful in the use of sick or personal time. Yes, the employer said it was yours. BUT the majority of US companies neither expect or want their employees to routinely use all the time they are given. Yes, I know it is unfair but as an 'at will' employee, the employer has the power to terminate you for just about anything.
I have had cases where employees who routinely used their full amount of sick time got poor reviews, were considered as having poor work ethics, and were eventually let go for some reason. I have had cases where we were unable to get a client unemployment benefits because the client was fired for chronic absenteeism (he used all his sick days every year).
Does it make sense, no. Is it unfair, for sure. Is it illegal for the employer to say you have so much time and then consider you a poor employee for using all that time, NO. Just the way it is.

You would be the employee that might cause the company to lower the number of sick hours they provide to employees. I know there are employees who think sick time is their right and there for them to use.
Actually sick time is not mandated by law and is a gift from the employer to assist employees who are ill or have ill family members. It IS unethical to use it for other things.
But, until your company comes down on you and requires notes from doctors, you can continue to do what you are doing. Just be prepared for the day when your supervisor terminates you for missing too much work.

It isn't illegal. If you aren't really sick or caring for a sick family member, it isn't ethical if it's stated as sick time rather than just "paid time off". Many companies are going to the "paid time off" rather than separating out sick time and vacation time.

I think almost everyone who works for a company where they incur and accumulate sick time takes this approach to using it. Anyone who's relatively healthy and feels as though they'll probably need 6 hours in a YEAR , deserves the right to use that time, however I must say, be careful about how you lie in using it or karma could come back and kick your butt.
Good uck!

It's up to the company to authorize use of the leave. If you call in sick and you really are not sick, and they can prove that you are abusing sick leave, they can fire you. Some states are "no cause" states, and if you employer even decides that you call in too much, sick or not, they can fire you.
It's not ethical to use sick leave if you are not sick. It's dishonest.

that's criminal yet very short sighted. It ability that individuals circulate in while they are unwell and unfold it around the agency. i know somebody who labored in a intense street food market who nonetheless went to artwork with ailment and diorehea - because of the fact she could desire to no longer discover the money for to be off without pay. This needless to say has well-being and secure practices implications. there'll allways be people who take the p*ss, yet many employers are taking benefit now.

Since you have a max limit, use it. When it comes time to claw back your retirement fund the company won't put you first. I know people who plan their sick time into their vacation, ie "have to get shots before travelling".
It is part of your benefits, if you don't use them, why have them? If you can't trade them for the equivalent cash value, use every one of your benefits to YOUR maximum advantage while you can.

Six hours a month? That's quite a lot, congrats. Nothing wrong with using it; I think they expect it.
