UK ? Don't quit or get fired .. to qualify for Statutory Maternity Pay you have to be with the same employer for at least 7 months .. go see the Citizens Advise Bureau (CAB) and find out what your entitlements are .. many employers have NO IDEA what they are required to do by law .. ..

Yes you will get paid for the time you are unemployed if you are fired. Unfortunately, your employer is smart and I don't know if they will fire you this late in your pregnancy knowing that they do not give you paid leave. When you get unemployment, your company's insurance rate goes up. Is there a way you can take your short term disability from your job? I ask this because you may not get approved by the Department of Labor for unemployment because you won't be available for work and that is a stipulation for collecting.

To follow up what tonalc said, when you get unemployment, every week you have to fill out a form and answer questions (at least in my state) and they are stuff like, "Have you made at least two serious attempts to find work in the past seven days?" and "Have you turned down an opportunity to work in the past seven days?" If you're not trying to find work, or turning down work, you don't qualifty for unemployment. Sure, you could lie, but it's a pretty serious if you get caught defrauding the State.
Also, if you quit, you can't get unemployment. You pretty much HAVE to be fired or laid off. I mean, you can't choose not to work a job that is available and then ask the rest of us to pay your bills. Sorry.

My understanding is that unemployment is paid for in the end by your company from their unemployment insurance. Usually if you are fired you are not eligible, unless you can prove in court that you were fired for improper reasons. Otherwise usually only people who are laid-off can collect unemployment.

Do not take that chance. As said before you must be able to work and seek work to receive unemployment.

You have to be available for work in order to get unemployment. Being very pregnant or being a new mom would not make you available.
