CALL POLICE. 911

REPORT AN ATTEMPT OF SOMEONE TRYING TO GAIN ENTRY.

Testing a lock on a door that is not of someone's own residence may constitute attempted breaking and entering.

The person could still be in the area. Police should be notified and make contact with you.

A patrol car generally scares off the bad guys.

Police will keep a record of the incident, in case it happens again, or in your area.

NEVER OPEN YOUR DOOR TO ANYONE YOU DON'T KNOW. INCLUDING SOLICITORS. You don't want to error and find out you should have not opened that door.

If you are not expecting someone, DO NOT TALK TO THEM. Act as if no one is there. Take defensive measures after calling 911. Protect yourself in the event of forced entry.

You did well by not opening the door as you never do so for anybody you don't know.... period. Even if the guy is holding a clipboard or something you don't. If a company has business with you they know how to call.

The whole knocking back thing was wrong. Plus the same goes if you both asked who it was as this indicates two females at home alone.

You really should inform the police. For one if the guy comes back and you call the police then he could say "it was a mistake". Not so if there is a prior report.

Plus somebody else could have previously filed a report. If they have enough reports then they might start to be on the lookout for a guy knocking on doors.

It is good that you did not open the door. Be cautious, don't open the door so easily. When someone knocks at your door just don't answer back. If that person needs you or knows you he will call or ask for an appointment with you. And if is very important or emergency he will shout for your attention. Why not make a small hole somewhere on your door just enough for you to peep so that you can see who's on the other side of the door. But don't peep so close 'cause it might harm you. Be careful always bad people are just around the corner. Don't give them a chance to harm anybody in your house. Take care.

Pretty much what you did. Ask who it is, tell them they have the wrong apartment, than make sure your place is locked up tight. If they return, call the cops.

Opened the door and asked -"what's wrong with you?" if not satisfied by his answer..called the police to take him behind the bars..

"what would you have done?"

Opened the door and said "Hi, can I help you?"
