NetBIOS is an acronym for Network Basic Input/Output System. It is a protocol originally designed for IBM to provide Transport and Session layer services for applications running on small homogenous networks. Now it runs as NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

NetBIOS is not BIOS like the stuff on mobo, it can be likened to transmission protocols like Novell IPX/SPX or general IP, a transmission protocol used by old DOS-based Microsoft networks.

If you do mean a networking preboot BIOS it is called PXE now, its internal working is not widely known but I did service a 386 that had PXE damage and the contractor took it off without replacement or knowing what importance it was to us. If what I made in boot floppy is good indication what it is then it is just DOS + card driver.
