For free patterns nothing beats Crochet Pattern Central.

One book I really recommend is Idiots guide to knitting and crocheting. I'm sure you can find it or one like it at your local library. Altho owning it gives you a great resource book for future projects.

I would suggest if possible get a variety of hooks. At Walmart they have a package of 6 or 7 different sizes for a reasonable amount. I think other places (hobby/craft stores) have the same deal.
As for when to use what hook with what yarn....That comes with practice and what the individual patterns call for.

it depends on the pattern that you are using. the pattern will say what size hook you will need. different yarn call for different hook sizes. If you look on the skein of yarn it will day that the knitting and crochet hook size to use with the yarn. It also depends on if you are working with yarn or thread (thread crochet uses steal hooks that are smaller and sized differently.

Also if you are using the yarn bee brand yarn (hobby lobby's yarn) Then you will have to adjust since the needle sizes they give are for the yarn bee crochet needles which are a little bigger than the Susan bates or the boyes. I like to keep one of each hook size in Susan bates and boyes because I have noticed with certain patterns the type of hook you use can cause a slight difference in gauge.

You will also want to make a sample swatch and message if your gauge is to what the pattern states ( this is crucial if you are making cloths) and you will have to adjust to a new hook depending on whether your gauge is to tight or loss.

Use a pattern, and the pattern will tell you what size hook to use. Pay attention to the gauge specified in the pattern. If your sample doesn't measure the same as theirs, then you adjust your needle one size up or down until it does.

There are plenty of free patterns on the web, you just have to decide what you want to make and type it into a search engine. For example you might go to http://google.com and type in "free crochet scarf pattern"
.

The best hook for a newbie is a H 5mm that way you can work with worsted weight yarn which is easier to handle. Those other hooks are a lil 2 small for a newbie good luck.

One of the best resources is that which is provided by The Craft Yarn Council of America, as they have been working with the industry (yarn manufacturers, hook producers, & such) for the past 25 years to create standards that will ultimately make our fiber art form much more enjoyable. At their site, http://www.yarnstandards.com/ you will find information on crochet hooks sizes as well as the recommended fiber size.

The relationship between the hook size and the fiber is important. Using a hook too small for your fiber can result in a very stiff fabric, whereas using a hook too large can create a fabric with more drape.

As far as finding free patterns, they are all over the Internet -- including on my website. Use a search engine like google using key words such as "crochet *name of item like "hat"* pattern" and you'll find many!

If you get stuck in figuring out a particular stitch, then I recommend visiting www.anniesattic.com as they host a merriment of video clips you can watch on your PC for free.
