In the movies he breaks one in Rivendell and then he breaks another one in Fangorn Forest when he throws it at Gandalf.

He seems to be portrayed as carrying a double headed axe across his back and holding a single headed axe.

I'll have to go look again to see if he grabs his friend's axe (gawd I'd be annoyed if someone grabbed my axe to destroy something and broke it) ...

But it really didn't look easily repairable. The axe head was shattered into pieces by striking the Ring.

Maybe they carry a bunch of spare axe heads with them wherever they go.

The one he breaks in Rivendell isn't his. He grabs the dwarf sitting next to him's axe, not his own. So he does not have to fix that one. I think he has more than one and can repair them.

The character is a skilled craftsmen, he is able to maintain and repair his equipment. Both "breaks" are fixable damage, the first a chip, the second the handle.
