Representatives are elected by the people to Congress in the making and amendment of laws which is happening in the present democratic system. Thus, modern democracy is now representative democracy.

A representative democracy is when officials are elected by the people, then act as a separate governing body for a set term (e.g., Congress). This is significant because although they are elected by the people, the representatives are not obligated to act according to the people's wishes.

This could be considered a pro or a con, depending on how you look at it. In an ideal world, the people would be involved in the decision making process, as in a direct democracy. However, because of the lack of political sophistication and general interest in politics, I personally feel that the representative democracy is sort of a necessary evil.

In a large community, it would be difficult to have a real democracy with all persons meeting at one place and time. A representative democracy solves this problem by having a representative for groups within the large population.

I hope you do not be confused between a representative democracy and a republic.
