I used to be friends with a depressed person or two, but not anymore. Not that I didn't try--I did. For years. But despite their wonderful qualities, the depression is just too much of a drag to be around. They sucked the life out of me. How do you have friends, depressed people, if you're the type who just yammers on about what a bummer life is, sighing, laying around, etc? Just curious...

i suffer from mild depression but never try to be around people in that state. I have a friend who is worse than me and just brings me down. sadly enough, I am not friends with her anymore because she brings me down even further. I used to keep saying, we must help eachother but her problems would overwhelm her so much and it was just too much.

I know how you feel

Sadly, I don't think they do have friends. They just suck the life out of people, one after the other, then move on. Kind of like psychological vampires.

I had the same experience--it's not worth the investment. You cannot cure them by being nice or supportive. It's an incurable biochemically-based illness; just terrible.

However, that being said, I think trying to be friends with seriously depressed people is actually enabling them, the same way people enable addicts.

Life is short--besides you cannot turn to them if you have a bad day, right? So what is a friend anyway?

Well, you were addressing depressed people; but I"ll put my two cents in.....Depression happens when a person is so obsessed with their unfortunate circumstance that he or she blocks out everything and everybody; dwelling in the situation over and over. That is when they need friends the most: to pull them out of this sorrowful quicksand. You made it sound like YOU broke the friendships off because YOU weren"t having any fun around them anymore. It"s not about you . It"s about being there for someone to convince him/her all is not hopeless. If you were a true-top-notch friend I think you could have tried harder to make them laugh, get up off the couch, and see what a "trip" life can be....

How do you have friends?? When you're not willing to be a friend to the lonely souls you question.

Naaah really just kidding. I've got friends. But it's only because I don't "yammer" about my problems. That's dumb to burden other people with your own problems.

Well aren't you sensitive. Maybe depressed people act the way they do because they're uh, depressed?

So instead of helping your "friend" get help, you just stopped being their friend. That's nice of you.

I kinda wonder how you have any friends.

I bet your friends stopped being depressed after you stopped being with them.
