Sigh. This stream of answers really puts Yahoo Answers in doubt. Most of them are just so wrong and tainted with ignorance, bigortry and foolishness.
Most system vendors like HP, Sony, Lenovo and others have an option to order a backup CD/DVD to restore the original factory state. But as some said, these are often unnecessary as the standard system configuration includes a system restore partition hidden on your hard drive. You can make your own with a system backup or a third-party utility. But I expect your hardware vendor has provided any number of ways to restore your system.

What brand of laptop? It may have a second hard drive that has that information on it and can be accessed by clicking something like F2 before the windows logo shows up. You could also contact the company that made it and ask for a master restore disk to be shipped to you. Usually doesnt cost any money.
EDIT: not all computers come with the reintall disk anymore so just cuz you dont have one doesnt mean its the stores fault.

I agree with William V, the Vista partition is probably on the hard drive.
Read The Friendly Manual (RTFM) for your laptop and follow ALL the installation instructions and “How To's” to the letter. Read all about Windows Recovery.
Still Stuck? Call the manufacturer for tech support.

How unfortunate you've got Vista!!
Look in "Computer" & you will see your Drive has a Recovery Partition. Don't format your drive or attempt to remove it. Leave it alone.
Don't know what the PC is but the manufacturer will have it well documented. ALSO, make a DVD copy of the recovery disk should your Hard Drive ever fail (or you forget your password!)

if you have an HP, there is a recovery partition that has all the stuff to reinstall your programs if it crashes. you also get the chance to burn a set of recovery disc on DVD. if this isn't the case, you can ask for the recovery disk from your laptop company online.

If you bought it from a legitimate store then you need to complain. If you got it from a friend or something then that's another story and unfortunately there's no way to get a new disc or re-install without one. You'll have to buy a new copy of Vista.
The only other option I can think of is to contact the vendor (Dell, Gateway, whatever the brand of your machine) and see if they have any options to get a replacement copy.
Good luck.

calm down. just look for a phone number on the case somewhere and call whoever makes it.. dell or.. whoever.. (or try their website) and just simply request some more restore disc. if it's new then you should have some type of warranty and they'll send you some free of charge.
no big deal.. they'll ask the model.. where/when you bought it.... your serial number and such and.. it's painless i promise.
