Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside
your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic
button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue
to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. This tip came
from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night
and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm
system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it.
It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking
until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the
key fob chain.
It works if you park in your driveway or garage If your car alarm goes off
when someone is trying to break in your house, odds are the burglar or
rapist won't stick around... after a few seconds all the neighbors will be
looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the
criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to
your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there..... This
is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could
save a life or a sexual abuse crime.
Would also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you
can't reach a phone.
My friends Mom has suggested to her Dad that he carry his car keys with him in case
he falls outside and she doesn't hear him. He can activate the car alarm
and then she'll know there's a problem.

I especially like the idea about using the car alarm in case of a fall. Since we can't get my father to agree to using a Life Alert, this is a simple and smart alternative. It would get the neighbors attention, which is most important in his situation.
Great info'...thanks for passing it on!

My '92 Jeep doesn't have an alarm and personally, I think they are a waste of time. I've seen too many of them going off because the car gets touched or bumped or the wind blows too hard and I've noticed the people pretty much ignore them.
My neighbor's used to go off in the middle of the night and it just P|ssed me off because it was only the wind.
They go off so easily that it's the "Cry Wolf" syndrome.
BTW, I keep my keys on a hook by the front door.
I asked the question below and seems that it would be a moot point if the car alarm DID go off. .... Sorry

I started keeping my keys and my purse by the bed a while ago. The only thing is I stay in an apartment upstairs and my alarm battery on the keychain died. Now what. There's at least 20 cars parked where I'm at. That's good though. I wish my parents had one on their cars.

This is an excellent tip! I have a real alarm on my car and can be activated by the keyless entry button on the key ring.
You deserve 10 stars but I will only be able to give you one.
Thanks so much for this tip! Best question tonight!!! CJ

Those are great ideas, especially if you have a car alarm!
Lately I seem to leave my keys in the front door. This way if I get burgled they won't break the door and they can have my car keys too, except the car is not running!!

That only works if you are lucky enought to have the money to buy a newish car. The old clunkers don't have the luxury of a car alarm system. I keep my keys on a nail beside the back door.

You'll probably want to buy a cool key-chain / lanyard and hook your keys to them. I do this and I go to a university. Or, if that's not an option, you can make room for it in your makeup bag and stick them in there. As trashy/bad as you perceive PDK (public display of keys), the last thing you'll want is to head to your car without them. :)

In the outside pocket of my purse, where I put them as soon as I take them out of the ignition. Unfortunately ol' '96 Geo Metro has no car alarm, so that's the best I can do. But then, I get 40 miles per gallon!

My truck does not have an alarm system on it, wish it did. When I am at home, my keys are hung on the wall. When I am away from home they are in my pocket.
That is some really good advise that you gave. I am going to email that to some of my friends. Could help some one out some time.

I don't have a remote fob for my car...so my keys are hanging on a hook next to my front door...it's a long time habit, so I don't lose them.
FYI - when you are walking [from car to wherever] keys can also be used a self defense tool...place one key each on the ring threaded through the space between your fingers...then close your hand into a fist...if necessary you can lash out with that hand and cause great damage - long enough to flee.
taught to me by self defense class
