Well that depends on the type of work you will be doing. If you will be doing somethingt that requires a tolerant operating system which can be used for doing video editing, animation, computer graphics and such you should get a PC. On the other hand if you are looking for more user friendliness and compatability, you should consider a mac. I personally have a PC and i do 3d animation and video editing on it, and so far from the experiences that i had ill say that a PC is pretty reliable.

You should type down what you plan to do with it.
Since some penis just gave me a thumbs down, I'll tell you straight away. Get a PC. A crapintosh is nowhere near as advanced as a PC. Enjoy your overpriced $2500+ Mac Pro with its "amazing" Geforce 7300GT. Enjoy your $850 4GB of DDR2-667 (you can get 4GB of DDR2-800 RAM for $200 on a PC). Enjoy your few programs that your Mac supports. Oh so now you say Macs can run Windows, which is why they're superior? Guess what, retard, you can install MacOSX on a PC as well. And don't let me get started on the iMac. You can't upgrade every component you want on that POS.
As for laptops...
Dell Inspiron 1720 - 17" - $1674
-Intel® Core⢠2 Duo T7700 (2.4GHz/800Mhz FSB/4MB cache)
-Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition
-2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
-320GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
-256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT
-CD / DVD writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)
-Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini-Card
-Built-in Bluetooth capability (2.0 EDR)
-High Definition Audio 2.0
-Weight: 7.6 pounds
Apple MacBook Pro (17" ) - $2,949.00
-2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4MB L2 cache
-Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
-2GB (two SO-DIMMs) of PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2
-250GB Serial ATA Drive @ 4200 rpm
-256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
-SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
-AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n)
-Built-in Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate)
-Integrated Audio
-Weight: 6.8 pounds
You decide which is a better deal.

If you have not list out what you plan to do with it there is little to be said by any of us but PCs do have more mass appeal hence a safer bet due to its openness from the get-go since the 80s.

Basically you have 2 options. You can spend $2,000+ on a computer that less than 5% of the world uses, or you can spend $300-500 on a computer that 95% of the world uses.
Note: Supply vs Demand applies to software and hardware.
Bottom line: Apple is a money pit. Don't get sucked into it.

I can tell from how to talk that you don't really need a good computer. Get something really basic if all you want to do is read email, write things, play what you call games. Here is a good one. http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspndt_53xs?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~tab=bundlestab

I personally like PCs better just because I'm used to them. I used a Mac for years before I ever used a PC though. Macs are more flashy and there to look good. But if you don't care about looks and you want function.. get a PC.
