I don't any more, but I have all my life. I lost the sight in one eye from a detached retina and can't see good enough, but my dear Dad always let me help him fix cars as a shade tree mechanic, back when you COULD do your own car repairs. I can't tell you how many times that it has come to help me, too!
I'm in the process of teaching my son to do the same thing with a 16yr old son now....change the air filter, where to put what fluids, change a spark plug and where they are....all those things that can help tell you things these days. I think it's sad that they make cars that need a diagnostics hook up to fix them now a days. Luckily my son will have the basics and go to college, so he can take the car to a mechanic our family uses who won't fleece you.
You should have seen me on the side of an Interstate in a navy pencil skirt and $100 blouse and jacket changing my own tire rather than waiting for a man to come along and rescue me! I went on to a job interview and got the job, too!

Yes. As should you. You save money and still get a higher quality filter and oil then what they will use. Also you don't have to deal with them tell you that you need this and that done so they can charge you more money. Just be sure to recycle your used oil. Many places do it like Checker auto, just check around.

I think its stupid to change your own oil i mean its like 20 bucks and takes 10 min to have it changed. plus the check every thing and stuff. why pay 10-15 for oil and then do all the work

yes . put pan to catch oil under your car. take plug oit let drain. take off oil filter turns off by hand usually. then put plug in tight put new oil filter on snug after you fill it with oil, and oil the rim good with your finger. then fill with oil and check, good to go. an additive for a short period b4 a change is always good, try seafoam. in the oil and in the gas, leave in oil a bit og=f if a couple days b4 changing. i love full synthetic, as do cars, last 6-10k between changes in most cars and is awesome in the lubricating aspect. good luck

At 19.99 at an oil change place, why bother. I would need to buy 6 quarts of oil, an oil filter and pay to dispose of it and probably ruin a shirt or pair of pants in the process. Even if I didn't ruin any clothes it would only save me 5 bucks.

i basically know how and it wouldn't be too tough to do it myself but the cost runs pretty much the same if you get it done for you. it's even a painless process with so many shops doing it, literally, in minutes.
and i don't have to risk breaking a nail.

there are people whose job depends on customers getting an oil change. i like to think of it as helping all those folks out.

No, It's covered under my warranty and all oil changes and tire rotations are free. So I let them do it.
