Opinion only! I have used both for laptops and desktops and I prefer AMD as they appear to out perform Intel chips of the same speed.
I have switched to using nothing but AMD in all 5 of my computers.
Did you notice that someone went through and gave thumbs down on all answers that said use AMD. Kind of funny really.

Typically AMD laptop processors give less performance per clock speed and per Watt than Intel processors (and whilst AMD used to lead on the desktop they've never really had the best products on laptops, just the cheapest).
If you have the money or need good performance (or good performance and battery life) then you want an Intel Core 2 Duo.
If you are short on money then an AMD processor can be a good thing because it would allow you to spend your money on getting better components in other parts of the laptop even if it means you get an inferior processor.
I wouldn't worry about buying either because both companies make some damn good products but Intel are better at the moment (and they're better than AMD pretty much everywhere and that doesn't look set to change soon).

I'd vote Intel - when I was searching for a laptop 2-3 months ago, the general consensus was that Intel was definitely making the better laptop processors (esp. because of the heat problem). I have an AMD processor for my desktop and am definitely a fan for their price vs. performance ratio - in fact, I wanted to read AMD processors were better...I just didn't. So, for me, I'd choose Intel for a laptop processor, AMD for a desktop processor.

AMD processors will blow Intel processors away. Bigger cache = more power.
Also, AMD CPUs run cooler and at lower voltages, so you don't have to worry about overheating. As an added bonus, AMD CPUs will make your battery last longer.
Another thought: don't use Vista, it's crap. Use XP
AMD is the way to go both for deskies and lappies. Go AMD!
I personally use an AMD Athlon X2 6000+ 3.0GHz dual core in my desktop. Right now it's at 98ºF... body temperature! The thing is a beast for power bu tit runs cool, and at only 1.31V. Go with AMD
I have always used AMD if I could help it: I have an old Athlon 650MHz in my room, I got my parents to buy a box with an Athlon 3500+ 2.2GHz, and, of course, My BEAST.
You can see a screenshot at http://thorsdecree.excessiveforce.org/images/desktop.jpg
Tell me what you think! btw, it's wide because I use dual monitors ^.^
[edit] Intel... newer technology??? What do you mean? AMD is taking a great market share, doing awesome research. They had x64 before Intel even considered it! What do you mean, AMD has the newer tech. Unless you're referring to quad-core Intels... who needs 'em? I personally have never reached 70% cpu on my system, check the screenshot, you'll see. CPU meter at top/center.

AMD is typically lower cost, and usually better performance. Intel and AMD go back and forth as to who is ahead in the race.
I prefer AMD myself and any machines I have bought/setup for my own network and several others get AMD processors. I made an exception for a couple rack-mount servers simply because they were a good deal and for what they do it's not that critical.

its a matter of preference really. i prefer intel. i used to prefer transmetta for a processor on a laptop coz they run really cool & very efficient even without a fan but it seems the don't make those anymore. i'm not sure. for the record, a 1.5ghz intel core 2 duo runs faster & cooler than an inte pentium4 3.0ghz. get an intel if you can. newer technology.
