Percentages 101:

In order to find the % of anything, you first turn the % into a decimal by carrying the decimal place of the % over to the left two places.

Examples

40% = 0.40
6.7% = 0.067
544.2% = 5.442

Then, you take the whole number of the figure you are trying to get a % of (such as $245.99) and times that number by the new decimal you just found.

Example
$245.99 x 0.40 = $98.396

However, you're not down yet. What you just found now was what 40% of the total price is, not 40% OFF the price.

So, one last step: take that new number ($98.396 or $98.40 if you round up) and subtract it from the total price.

Example
$245.99 - 98.40 = $147.59

...And there you are!

Simple equation for all purpose % problems:

(Total Price) - [(Total Price) x (% as a Decimal)] = Sale Price

Hope it helps!

Yeh...me too. I used to think that everything asked was a trick question. The good thing is that Ive never once had to actually use Math...I know 50% is half and 25% is a quarter...so rough guessing usually puts you in the ballpark.

Even when I worked in the government, the computer programs work it all out for you...so you just say what it is you are looking at and how an assessment is worked out according to the info you have in front of you.

If it is 40% off then just think of the number as 100%. The remainder will be 60% which in decimal form is .6 (divide the percentage by 100 to get decimal form). Just plug into your calculator $245.99 times .6 which comes out to be $147.59 (rounded by 1 decimal).

any percent is X%/100% so 40% is .4 if you multiplied 245.99 by .4, you would get 40 % of 245.99. so to get 40% off, you just subtract the 40 %, or, you could just multiply 245.99 by .6 and get the same thing (.4 + .6 = 1)

40% is .4 on a calculator.

so just multiply .4 times the value you want to find the percent of.

40%= 40/100 which equals .4 :)

$245.99x0.4= $98.40

you dont suck at math, you just need to learn to apply applications to problems and what you know....

first take 40% of $245.99
on a calculator it would look like this
245.99 x .4
the answer you get is the discount..
take the price, $245.99 and subtract the discount... and you have the price with 40% off

40% off would be the same as 60% of the original price. $245.99 is almost $246 x .6 = $147.60. You would be saving $98.40.

40% off means (100 -- 40 = 60)% of it.
60% of $245.99 = $256.794
