The twenty second amendment of the Constitution states that "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once" it was ratified in 1951.

Franklin Roosevelt is the only person to serve three terms, from 1933 to 1945. Before he did that it was always considered an "unwritten rule" among presidents.

Washington set the precedent of having a President as he turned down the role of King of the US. Until FDR I don't think we had term limits. We set them after FDR as he was likely to keep getting reelected except for his untimely death.

He set the precedent of only serving two terms, each of four years. This did not become an amendment until many years later when....i can't remember who....had the seat for a very long time.

He established a precedent by limiting himself to two four-year terms. FDR deviated from that by being elected 4 times (but died during his fourth term).
