All I know is what I've read from advertisements, so really I just want to get some opinions from actual people. Do you think it's important to keep the cord blood?
They are saying it's the 'medicine of the future'. When I first read it I thought they wanted me to donate the cord blood, either for research or so that any baby who needs it can use it. I was a little disappointed when I realized they just wanted to charge me to hold it. Are there organizations that I can donate to?

The idea is that stem cell transplants from cord blood are often more effective than bone marrow transplants for certain illnesses.

You can donate to a public cord blood bank, or for research, or pay to have it stored in case your child or someone in your family needs it.

Here's some info:

Donation is fine if you want, but you don't need to have your baby's stored. If stem cells from cord blood are used for medical reasons, your child can always receive the universal blood type - just like with a blood transfusion. I was going to have my baby's cord blood banked three years ago, until I did some research on it. It's just a business scheme, and it's not cheap.

yeah, its a business...its a good thing to have if you can afford it. I am not sure about the donation thing, but I know if you want to store cord blood for you or your family's future use, its gonna cost you.

Donation is an option. We stored it and it wasn't cheap but it feels like a safety net to me. If you can afford it, I don't think it's a bad idea.
